Types of Docket Entries in Knox County

Every case in Knox County creates a docket. The docket is a running record of everything that happens from the first filing to the final disposition. Civil cases start with a complaint and then list answers, motions, discovery deadlines, and judgments. Criminal cases log the charging document, arraignment, bond hearings, plea changes, trial dates, and sentencing. Family cases track divorce petitions, custody motions, support orders, and modifications over time.

Probate dockets in Knox County track estate openings, claims filed against estates, accountings, and distributions. Small claims cases also get their own docket entries, though those tend to be shorter since the process moves faster. Each entry includes a date, a description, and sometimes the name of the person who filed it. Restricted Docket Records in Knox County

Certain Knox County court docket records are restricted from public access. Administrative Rule 9 allows judges to seal records when there is a legal reason to do so. Sealed cases disappear from MyCase and cannot be viewed at the clerk's office. Juvenile records are shielded from public view under IC 31-39-2.

Expunged records are gone entirely. Under IC 35-38-9, a person who qualifies can ask the court to remove their criminal record from all public systems. Once granted, the Knox County docket entries for that case are deleted from both the online portal and the physical files. The Indiana Courts website explains the expungement process in more detail.

Searching Older Knox County Docket Records

Knox County has a long history. Vincennes was Indiana's first state capital. The court system has been running for a very long time. Older cases may not appear in the MyCase online system, which only covers records from the Odyssey era forward. If you need docket information from a case filed decades ago, contact the clerk's office directly. Paper records at the courthouse go back much further than the digital database.

The clerk's staff can help you locate older files by case number or party name. If you only have a name, they may be able to search their index books to find the right case. Call (812) 885-2521 to check before visiting.
